Mastercard and BVNK Bring Traditional and Digital Money Into One Platform
Mastercard's new platform connects accounts, stablecoin conversion, bank payouts and card spending through one API.
Mastercard has been expanding its infrastructure for digital currencies as stablecoins move into areas such as business payments, payouts, settlement and treasury. The strategy took a significant step forward in August 2026 when Mastercard completed its acquisition of BVNK, bringing BVNK's stablecoin infrastructure together with Mastercard's global payments network.
On October 15, Mastercard and BVNK launched Mastercard Global Money Platform, their first major product integration since the acquisition. The platform gives banks, FinTechs and enterprises a single API for embedding accounts, currency conversion, cards and payouts across traditional currencies and stablecoins. Businesses can also use the infrastructure directly for treasury, collections, payments and settlement.
What the Global Money Platform provides
Global Money Accounts: The platform provides multi currency accounts where traditional currencies and stablecoins can be held together. FinTechs and technology platforms can embed these accounts within their own products and brand, giving customers one place to hold, receive, convert and move funds.
Real-Time Conversion: Customers can convert between traditional currencies and stablecoins through the same integration. This brings the conversion layer into the account infrastructure rather than requiring a separate provider for moving between the two forms of money.
Local Bank Payouts: Integration with Mastercard Move allows stablecoin balances to fund local currency payments directly into recipients' bank accounts. Mastercard Move currently reaches more than 17 billion endpoints, with platform coverage expected to expand to more than 40 currencies across over 200 countries and territories in 2027.
Stablecoin Card Spending: Customers will also be able to issue Mastercard cards linked to stablecoin balances and use those balances across Mastercard's global merchant acceptance network. Card issuing through the platform is available across more than 130 countries.
Modular Infrastructure: The platform is structured around send, receive, convert, store, spend and earn capabilities. Customers can adopt the functions they need first and add others over time, reducing the need to integrate separate providers for different stages of money movement.
Treasury and Settlement: Beyond embedded customer products, enterprises can use the platform to manage their own liquidity, collections, payouts and settlement activity. This is particularly relevant for businesses handling receipts and payments across multiple currencies and markets, where separate accounts, providers and prefunded balances can add operational complexity.
Future Capabilities: Mastercard and BVNK have designed the platform to accommodate additional forms of regulated digital money and emerging payment models. Planned capabilities include support for tokenized deposits and agentic commerce.
Who Sits on the Council?
First companies integrating the platform: Nuvei, Marqeta, Ontop, Beem and Almond FinTech are among the first companies integrating Mastercard Global Money Platform. The platform is already available through BVNK.
🚨 What This Signals for the Financial Sector
Stablecoins are being connected directly with established payment infrastructure. Mastercard is linking them with accounts, currency conversion, bank payouts and card spending, making the focus less about holding digital currencies and more about using them within existing financial flows.
Banks and FinTechs have another route to offer digital currency capabilities without building each component separately. Institutions can embed accounts, conversion, cards and payouts through one infrastructure layer while keeping the service within their own customer experience.
Mastercard is building infrastructure around multiple forms of money rather than a separate stablecoin product. The inclusion of traditional currencies today, stablecoins alongside them, and planned support for tokenized deposits shows how Mastercard is structuring the platform around interoperability between different forms of value.
The BVNK acquisition is already moving into Mastercard's product stack. The Global Money Platform launched just over two months after the acquisition closed and represents the first major combination of the two companies' capabilities.
