Fiserv Integrates Mastercard Agent Pay Into Merchant Platform

Fiserv Integrates Mastercard Agent Pay Into Merchant Platform

Fiserv expanded its partnership with Mastercard to support agentic commerce by integrating Mastercard’s Agent Pay Acceptance Framework into its merchant acceptance infrastructure.

The integration enables artificial intelligence systems to initiate, authenticate, tokenize, and settle card-based transactions using existing network rails, aligning payment execution with emerging software-driven commerce models while keeping transactions within established authorization and settlement flows.

How the Integration Reshapes AI-Initiated Payments

  • Embedding agentic transactions into existing acceptance flows:  The integration allows AI-initiated purchases to pass through the same authorization, settlement, and reconciliation processes already used by merchants, removing the need for separate workflows or custom AI transaction logic.

  • Tokenization as the foundation for AI execution: Mastercard’s Secure Card on File is incorporated, with Fiserv acting as a network token requestor, replacing raw card data with network-issued tokens so AI agents can transact without accessing underlying credentials.

  • Authentication built for non-human actors: The framework introduces controls to verify whether an AI agent is authorized to act on a user’s behalf and whether transactions comply with predefined limits, rather than relying on human-centric authentication signals.

  • Preserving network-level controls as automation increases: Transactions initiated by AI agents remain subject to existing fraud, risk, and network governance mechanisms, maintaining card network oversight as initiation shifts from people to software.

  • Merchant enablement without platform changes: Merchants using Fiserv’s acceptance infrastructure, including its Clover point-of-sale and eCommerce platforms, can accept agent-initiated payments without modifying checkout experiences or backend systems.

  • Positioning within broader network standards development: The integration aligns with parallel efforts across card networks, including Fiserv’s work with Visa on agent validation protocols, reflecting an industry-wide move to define how AI-driven transactions operate within card ecosystems.

By integrating Mastercard’s Agent Pay framework into its merchant infrastructure, Fiserv is extending existing card acceptance systems to accommodate AI-initiated commerce without altering core payment rails. The move reflects a broader industry effort to adapt payment controls, authentication, and governance to software-driven transaction initiation as agentic commerce begins to enter live environments.
