Alberta Launches Digital Wallet for Government-Issued Documents

The Government of Alberta has launched Alberta Wallet

The Government of Alberta has launched the Alberta Wallet, a digital tool that securely stores and provides access to government-issued documents in one place. Available as a mobile app (iOS and Android) or through an Alberta.ca Account, the wallet is part of the province’s effort to modernize public services and give residents faster, more convenient access to essential documents.

The first credential available is the Mobile Health Card, making it easier for residents to access healthcare without a physical card. More documents will be added over time, turning the wallet into a central hub for Alberta-issued credentials.

Participation is entirely optional, giving Albertans the choice to continue using physical cards if they prefer.

Why This Matters

Digitizing government documents goes beyond convenience - it helps future-proof public services. With more interactions moving online, the Alberta Wallet offers:

  • Security: Encryption protects personal data, controlled only by the user.

  • Convenience: Access documents anytime, anywhere - no more lost or damaged cards.

  • Privacy: Built to meet Alberta’s strict privacy laws, plus national and international standards.

  • Durability: Digital versions don’t wear out or get misplaced.

  • Simplicity: Just a verified Alberta.ca Account is needed.

By meeting these needs, the Alberta Wallet improves both the user experience and trust in digital service delivery.

What This Means for the Industry

  • For Residents:

    • A simple way to carry essential documents, starting with healthcare and expanding to more services - saving time and reducing hassles.

  • For the Government of Alberta:

    • Establishes Alberta as a leader in digital-first public service delivery while laying the groundwork for future integrations.

  • For the Wider Public Sector:

    • A model for how governments can adopt secure, privacy-focused tools to improve service delivery - potentially inspiring similar initiatives elsewhere.
