Scotiabank’s Tangerine Partners with Engine by Starling to Modernize Core Banking
Tangerine Bank, a subsidiary of Scotiabank, has signed a 10-year agreement with Engine by Starling - the SaaS arm of the Starling Group - to power a new cloud-native banking platform for over two million clients in Canada. This marks Engine’s first North American partnership following its expansion into Toronto and New York earlier this year.
Key Highlights of the Partnership:
➡️ Agreement Overview: Tangerine will transition its digital banking system to Engine’s modular, cloud-based platform, boosting agility, speeding up product launches, and simplifying long-term maintenance.
➡️ Customer Experience: Clients will benefit from a modern digital banking setup featuring seamless onboarding, chequing and savings accounts, overdrafts, debit cards, and smart money tools like spending insights and card controls - all within the Tangerine app.
➡️ Efficiency Gains: The new platform will streamline backend operations, unify account management, and cut system complexity, supporting a more efficient digital infrastructure.
➡️ Local Collaboration: A Toronto-based Engine team will work closely with Tangerine across product, delivery, and tech functions to roll out new features.
➡️ Technology Backbone: Built on a modular, API-first foundation, Engine’s SaaS core enables scalable deployments and faster innovation - part of a wider industry move away from legacy systems.
The partnership underscores the next phase of Canada’s digital banking evolution. It highlights a broader industry movement in which financial institutions adopt modular SaaS platforms to modernize core systems, improve operational processes, and support long-term digital transformation efforts.
