Shopify Pushes Deeper Into AI Shopping With OpenAI And Meta
Shopify is extending its commerce infrastructure across AI discovery, advertising, checkout and merchant management.
Shopify has been positioning its platform so merchants can sell wherever consumers begin their shopping journey, including inside AI assistants. Its Agentic Storefronts already make eligible merchant products available across AI channels including ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and Meta. Product information is distributed through Shopify's commerce infrastructure, while merchants continue to manage participating channels and resulting orders through Shopify.
Two September developments extend that strategy into different parts of the purchase journey. Shopify became OpenAI's first ecommerce partner for ChatGPT Ads, giving merchants a direct route to paid product discovery inside ChatGPT. Days later, Shopify and Meta extended Shop Pay into Meta's Muse AI assistant, allowing eligible customers to move from AI assisted product discovery into Shopify powered checkout without leaving the Meta experience.
ChatGPT Adds a Paid Discovery Channel for Shopify Merchants
The ChatGPT Ads integration adds an advertising layer to Shopify's existing presence in ChatGPT. The app is free to install and connects a merchant's Shopify store directly with ChatGPT Ads Manager. Product inventory and catalog information can be synchronized automatically, while commerce events can flow through the OpenAI Pixel for Shopify for campaign measurement.
Merchants can create campaigns, select products, define budgets and targeting, and monitor performance from Shopify. Campaigns can cover the full catalog, an individual product or a website, with more detailed campaign controls also available through ChatGPT Ads Manager.
This gives Shopify merchants two distinct routes into ChatGPT. Eligible products can already appear through Shopify's Agentic Storefronts as part of organic product discovery, while the new integration adds the ability to pay for clearly marked advertising placements. For purchases originating through Shopify's ChatGPT sales channel, customers currently complete checkout through the merchant's Shopify store rather than through a native ChatGPT checkout.
The ChatGPT Ads integration is currently available to Shopify customers in the United States, with OpenAI stating that availability will expand to other markets where ChatGPT Ads operates.
Meta Brings Shopify Closer to Checkout Inside the AI Assistant
Shopify's Meta integration addresses a different part of the journey. Meta's Muse can help users discover products and, for eligible Shopify stores, support a Shopify powered direct checkout within the Meta experience. Shop Pay can appear as a wallet or checkout option when available.
Product discovery is supported through Shopify's connection with Meta, while checkout remains connected to Shopify's commerce infrastructure. Eligible merchants can therefore make products available within Meta and process purchases without requiring customers to move to a separate storefront. Orders continue to flow into Shopify for merchant management.
Shopify currently states that Meta direct checkout is available to eligible stores selling to customers in the United States, Canada or Mexico. Merchants can manage their participation and checkout settings through the Agentic section of Shopify Admin.
What the Two Integrations Add to Shopify
Discovery: Shopify is making merchant catalog data available where consumers increasingly search for products through AI conversations. ChatGPT Ads adds paid discovery alongside Shopify's existing organic AI commerce channels.
Checkout: The Meta relationship extends Shopify beyond discovery by bringing Shopify powered checkout and Shop Pay into an AI assistant experience for eligible merchants and customers.
Merchant Management: Both developments keep Shopify at the centre of the merchant workflow. ChatGPT campaigns can be created and measured through Shopify, while AI channel sales and participation can be managed through Shopify's existing administration tools.
Commerce Infrastructure: The common layer is Shopify's existing product catalog, merchant administration and checkout infrastructure. AI platforms provide the consumer interface, while Shopify supplies much of the commerce capability required to make merchant products discoverable and complete transactions.
🚨 What This Signals for Shopify
The two partnerships show Shopify expanding its role from powering individual online stores toward providing the commerce infrastructure behind shopping inside AI platforms.
The OpenAI integration gives merchants a new customer acquisition channel by connecting their catalogs and advertising activity directly to ChatGPT. The Meta partnership pushes further into transaction completion by allowing eligible purchases to use Shopify powered checkout and Shop Pay within the AI experience itself. Together, they place Shopify across more of the AI shopping journey, from product discovery and advertising to checkout and order management.
For merchants, the strategic change is that reaching an AI shopper does not require building a separate commerce system for each assistant. Shopify is increasingly acting as the common merchant layer while consumer discovery can happen across different AI platforms. Shopify's own Agentic Storefronts already centralize participation across several AI channels, and the OpenAI and Meta developments deepen that model through advertising and direct checkout capabilities.
