Instacart Launches Instacart App in OpenAI ChatGPT to Offer New Instant Checkout App Experience
Instacart Debuts First Full In-Chat Grocery Shopping Experience Inside ChatGPT
Instacart introduced an app within ChatGPT that enables users to search for grocery items, generate a ready-to-review cart, and complete payment through Instant Checkout without leaving the conversation. The integration connects Instacart’s real-time retail inventory, fulfillment network, and payment flow with ChatGPT’s model capabilities, creating an end-to-end shopping experience inside the chat interface.
The app is available on desktop and mobile web, while Instant Checkout will extend to native iOS and Android versions in the coming weeks. Transactions operate within ChatGPT through Stripe’s infrastructure and the Agentic Commerce Protocol, allowing a secure and contained checkout process supported by credit card payments and upcoming digital wallet options.
Key Highlights of the Launch
Embedded Shopping and Checkout Inside ChatGPT: Users can initiate the Instacart app through conversational prompts (e.g., requests for recipe ingredients). Once signed into their Instacart account, they can browse items, review a pre-assembled cart, and complete payment directly in ChatGPT, removing the need for tab switching or app hopping.
Instant Checkout With Stripe-Powered Transaction Flow: The integration enables in-chat credit card payments using a Stripe-supported checkout layer. Shared Payment Tokens protect payment credentials while enabling the transaction to be executed by merchants. Digital wallets such as Apple Pay and Google Pay will be supported shortly.
First Grocery Partner to Enable End-to-End Fulfillment Inside ChatGPT: Instacart is the first grocery app within ChatGPT to support the full workflow - product discovery, selection, and checkout - within the conversation. Orders are then processed and fulfilled through Instacart’s existing delivery network.
Platform Availability and Onboarding: The app experience is live on desktop and mobile web. Users install the app during first use by signing into their Instacart account. Instant Checkout will roll out on iOS and Android after users update to the latest version of ChatGPT.
Real-Time Inventory, Retail Coverage, and Personalization. The shopping experience is supported by:
More than 1,800 retailers and nearly 100,000 stores, covering 98% of North American households
A product catalog comprising over 2 billion product instances
Real-time pricing and inventory feeds to ensure selections reflect local stock
Personalization driven by past orders and buyer preferences (e.g., dietary requirements, brand choices)
This infrastructure allows AI-generated carts to reflect what is actually available nearby.
Fast Fulfillment: Orders are routed to Instacart’s delivery network, where shopper proximity to stores enables delivery in timeframes as short as 30 minutes.
Positioned for AI-Led Commerce Expansion: The integration represents one of the early implementations of agent-led commerce in groceries. As generative AI platforms expand into shopping and task automation, Instacart’s retail network and data infrastructure allow these agents to execute purchasing tasks aligned with user preferences and real-world availability.
About Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP)
The Agentic Commerce Protocol is an open standard co-developed by Stripe and OpenAI that enables AI agents to conduct transactions on behalf of users while maintaining merchant control over product data, checkout processes, and fulfillment. ACP facilitates secure payments through Shared Payment Tokens, which allow agents to initiate purchases without exposing sensitive credentials. Orders flow from the agent to the merchant's backend via a standardized interface, enabling businesses to participate in AI-driven commerce with a single integration across multiple agents.
